A Bond Beyond Borders: True friendship with a Japanese Soul (Part 1)
True friendships are often the result of years of shared
experiences, evolving through the rhythms of daily life. They might begin in
the laughter-filled halls of grade school, deepen through the pivotal years of
high school, and mature further during the transformative stages of college and
adulthood. These connections are woven from countless moments—both mundane and
extraordinary—creating bonds that withstand the passage of time and life's
inevitable changes.
My friendship with Kei (my Japanese student who later became
my best friend) began through the unique dynamic of teacher and student in an
online English class. Among the many educators in the virtual school, she
specifically chose me--she later revealed it was because of the college I
graduated from. I felt truly honored by her choice, which inspired me to
dedicate myself wholeheartedly to providing the highest quality English
instruction I could. There were times
when she grew weary of studying English, and our lessons naturally shifted into
daily conversations about life. She mentioned that conversational English was
still a valuable part of her learning journey. These talks became an opportunity
for us to exchange thoughts, dreams, aspirations, and even frustrations.
Looking back, I would say it was during these moments that our friendship truly
began to take root.
After a few years, I found myself growing tired of teaching in the same online school. The desire to broaden my horizons and explore new opportunities became stronger. When I told Kei about my decision to leave, her response left a lasting impression on me. With heartfelt simplicity, she said, 'I’ll go where you go.' Those words reflected the depth of our connection and the trust we had built over time. She expressed her wish to continue our lessons privately. I knew my limitations and therefore I instinctively replied, 'It wouldn’t be right for me to take you on as my student.' Her answer was resolute and heartfelt: 'Leaving the school won’t change my decision. I still want to learn from you, in whatever way you feel is right and comfortable.' Hoping she might reconsider, I gave her some time to reflect—but her determination never wavered. And so, our vibrant and truly joyful journey began.
As part of our learning journey, we decided to travel
together—a decision that eventually made us lifelong travel companions. Our
first adventure took us to Palawan, where we relished the beauty and serenity
of Lagen Resort. Naturally, this was just the beginning of many exciting,
fun-filled trips, which I plan to share in my future blogs. But is this enough
to say that I found a true friend in Keiko? My answer is, 'No.'
Years went by, and sadly, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Devastated, I confided in her, pouring out my deepest fears and emotions. As a
testament to her unwavering friendship, Keiko flew all the way from Japan to
visit me in the hospital. Her gesture deeply moved me, revealing the depth of
her care and our bond.
So, how would I define true friendship? True friendship is a
connection between individuals that transcends shared joyful moments; it is a
bond rooted in mutual trust, comfort and unwavering support during both the highs and
lows of life. It knows no boundaries—neither of geography nor circumstance—and
thrives beyond borders. This profound truth revealed itself to me through my remarkable friendship with my Japanese best friend, Keiko—a bond that embodies the purest form of loyalty, understanding, and steadfast support in every season of life.
