Your Eyes Deserve the Best—Here’s Who I Recommend, Dr. Zita Zagala-Meriales

“The eyes are the window to the soul,” they say—and sometimes, even to one’s health. Today, I had the pleasure of watching an insightful interview at UNTV with Dra. Zita Zagala-Meriales, a seasoned ophthalmologist at Makati Medical Center. Fondly known as Mizzi, she is not just a respected medical expert, but also a dear friend and batchmate from our days at the School of the Holy Spirit.

Beyond the interview, I’ve witnessed her compassion firsthand when she graciously accommodated my sister at Makati Med for a cataract evaluation. Her calm demeanor and depth of knowledge left me in awe, as she explained complex eye conditions and preventive care with such clarity and warmth. It was more than just a lesson in eye health—it was a masterclass in empathy and excellence.

I’ve been nearsighted for years, yet I’ve never actually consulted an ophthalmologist—except once, when I accompanied my sister to see Doc Mizzi. Typically, I just visit an eye center for a check-up with an optometrist, who examines vision, diagnoses common eye issues, and prescribes corrective lenses or basic treatments. It’s different from seeing an ophthalmologist, who is a medical doctor specializing in diagnosing and treating eye diseases, performing surgeries, and managing more complex eye conditions.

Aside from being nearsighted, my eye grade has held steady at 50 for years—but lately, I’ve found myself squinting at my laptop and struggling to read from my tablet without my trusty reading glasses. It’s clear that it’s time to visit Doc Mizzi and finally get to the bottom of what’s really going on with my vision.

And if you, too, have noticed things looking a little blurrier than usual—whether from age, long screen hours, or just life catching up with your eyes—I can’t recommend anyone more highly than the brilliant Dr. Zita Zagala-Meriales of Makati Medical Center.

In my book, Doc Mizzi is not just an eye doctor; she’s a vision saver.
