More Than Messages: Finding Meaning in a Constant
Online Male Friend
As much as this could have been a sensational, juicy
headline—trust me, it’s not. Lol. Instead, this is simply a story about
an American friend I met on a dating site. For nearly a year now, we’ve been
exchanging thoughts, perspectives, and emotional support through words and
voice— little
echoes sent between us across time zones, shaping a connection neither of us
anticipated but somehow nurtured into something real.
To be precise, we started messaging on June 20, 2024. Crazy
how time flies, right? His name is Danny. And Danny, if you’re reading this,
don’t even start worrying about privacy—your name is practically everywhere.
Lol.
Let’s Rewind a Bit
For a couple of years, I dabbled in online dating (no need to
mention the site). One day, I stumbled upon a profile that caught my eye,
and instead of waiting around, I took the initiative. That’s right—I made the
first move. Nothing to be shy about in this day and age.
His profile showed a ruggedly handsome man—though a bit
younger. Well, about 5 to 10 years younger, to be precise. Lol. A few
basic facts: 49 years old, an engineer, and so on. Eventually, I discovered
he’s closer to my age—what a relief! Haha. He responded respectfully,
launching into his views on the world—its intricacies, its warnings. I remember
distinctly telling him, I’m not here for a lecture on global affairs. I’m
just looking for a suitable partner. Plain and simple.
Yet, something about him intrigued me enough to hand over my
WhatsApp number. And here we are, still in touch to this day.
The Sweetest Surprise
Among all the men I met online, Danny is probably the sweetest
and most genuine person I’ve ever come across. He’s undeniably busy—he’s made
that clear—but despite his hectic schedule, whenever I ran to him for comfort
or empathy, he was always there. A text, a voice message—small gestures
that carried big meaning.
And so, I discovered something: You can have a virtual
friend who gives you encouragement and support. He didn’t have to be physically
present to make a difference. (Though, let’s be honest, I wouldn’t mind if one
of these days we could meet in person. Hint hint, Danny!)
A Heartfelt Thank You
This blog is my way of saying ‘thank you’ to you (Danny)
for always showing up when I needed it most. You filled the empty spaces during
moments of loneliness. Sure, I confided in my close female friends—but you
brought in a different perspective, one that helped me process everything I’ve
undergone, and probably what’s still ahead.
People come and go. Even those I once called friends have
drifted away. But you? You’re still here. For now. Lol. (Don’t make
me scrap this blog just because you read it and decide to disappear into thin
air to prove me wrong! Haha!) But
seriously—some burdens feel lighter when you’re around.
Finally, thank you for being the kind of friend who reminds me
that even in distance, connection is real. In a world that often feels
fleeting, you are proof that some people stay—not just in messages, but in
meaning.
